Working to make Oxford a better place for people on foot

Meetings:

Tuesday March 23rd 2010. Christopher Gowers will speak on "The Oxford Green Lungs Project: the vision and groundwork to date". Join us at 7.00 pm in Oxford Town Hall. All welcome.

Live issues:

Good news: 20 mph limit reduces deaths and injuries! A study published by the British Medical Journal finds that the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in London 1986 to 2006 was associated with a 41.9% reduction in road traffic casualties. See the summary report.

Oxford station master plan. The draft plan for Oxford railway station developed by Oxfordshire County Council with Network Rail is now out to consultation. See OxPA's comments.

Local Transport Plan 3 (LTP3). Consultations are continuing. See OxPA's response to Consultation 3 and to Consultation 4.

OxPA's solution to 10 trouble spots - see report from The Oxford Mail.

Transform Oxford. Oxfordshire Council has been proceeding with its pedestrianization of Queen Street. See OxPA's comment on the plan. See also a note on our public meeting with a representative of the Transform Oxford team and our response to the original initiative.

20mph speed limits. We congratulate Oxfordshire County Council on implementing the 20mph limit throughout Oxford from September 1st 2009. We will continue to press for extending the benefits to all radial roads where people live, walk, shop and cycle. Visit our Campaigns section for details of our contributions to the debate on the Council's proposals. We welcome the campaign for a 20mph speed limit in Witney and news of progress in Abingdon.

Pavement parking. OxPA maintains that Pavements are for People and should not be used as car parks. We have objected strongly to recent proposals to legalise pavement parking in parts of East Oxford, and have supported a local protest. Read how the proposals ignore official guidance on pavement widths.

Other pavement obstructions: wheelie bins, abandoned bicycles, and even lamp posts.

Chiltern Railways. See OxPA's view on improving pedestrian access to the railway station from North Oxford to accompany Chiltern Railways' proposal for a new rail route to Oxford and London.

Oxford City Council Core Strategy. OxPA has submitted a critical comment on the Council's plans for development in Oxford up to 2026.
